In our world, change is constant, and uncertainty is inevitable, making spiritual stability seem almost unattainable. However, God’s Word invites us to go deeper—by being rooted in Christ rather than in our circumstances. Colossians 2:6-7 AMP encourages us, just as we have received Christ Jesus our Lord, we ought to continue to live our lives in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as we were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. This kind of rootedness isn’t based on external events but on who Christ is within us.
Roots that Withstand the Storm
Trust is often misunderstood because we tend to place trust in what we can see, feel, and control. While the world encourages us to rely on our abilities, networks, strategies, or intelligence, scripture compares a grounded believer to a deep-rooted tree that can withstand wind and drought, illustrating true stability. Jeremiah 17:7–8 AMP vividly portrays this stability.
This doesn’t mean we won’t experience the effects of hardship. But when our roots go deep, we are not uprooted by them. We remain grounded because our source of life is constant. Trusting in God is not just a passive state but an active reliance on His character and promises. This trust brings about divine blessings, as God is faithful to those who place their confidence in Him. The Hebrew word for “trust” (batach) implies a sense of security and safety. In contrast to relying on human strength or wisdom, placing confidence in God leads to true security.

Building Lives That Don’t Shake
In Hebrews 12:28 AMP, we are reminded that we belong to an unshakeable Kingdom. This should inspire us to build a life rooted not in money, recognition, health, or stability, but solely in Christ. In rural areas, this is especially crucial. Crops can fail, markets may fluctuate, and families often face hardships. Yet, those who have deep faith in Jesus serve as stabilisers for others. They do not rely on perfect conditions to thrive; instead, they draw strength from an unshakable Saviour.
“Trusting in the LORD implies a deep reliance and faith in Gods character and promise.’’
Overflowing with Thankfulness
Paul says that those rooted in Christ are not only strong—they are thankful. Thankfulness is one of the fruits of a grounded heart. It’s the expression of a soul that trusts God, even when the visible harvest is small. When we are rooted in Christ, our gratitude does not rise and fall with our situation. It flows from a deeper source: the love of God, the promises of His Word, and the hope of eternity.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You are our sure foundation, the rock upon which we stand. Teach us to be rooted in You and not in our changing circumstances. Help us to grow deep in Your Word, to trust You in every season, and to overflow with thankfulness. May our lives reflect the stability and strength that comes only from abiding in You. This we pray, believing and trusting in Your name, Amen.
