I never imagined that a routine work trip—and a bag full of sweets—would lead to a beautiful ministry among the children in my estate. Yet God delights in turning ordinary moments into seeds of eternal impact.
A Divine Setup in Ordinary Work
My name is Faith Wanja, 42 years old. I am a born-again believer in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, a mother of two jubilant boys, and a dietician by profession. Through my work, I constantly witness the invisible yet unmistakable hand of God—guiding, protecting, shaping, and weaving all things together for His glory (Romans 8:28).
In November 2024, I received a nomination letter assigning me to a tender evaluation process in a city hotel for 21 days. I accepted the assignment and settled into the daily routine.
Meanwhile, my sons were away in the village for the school holidays, while many of the younger children in our estate remained at home until Christmas. God was already preparing the ground where His Word would be planted.
At the hotel, bowls of sweets were placed on the tables for anyone who needed a quick energy boost. My colleagues rarely touched them, but I somehow found myself collecting them day after day until my bag was full—unaware that God was stocking my hands with seeds for ministry.
“Cast your bread upon the waters,
for after many days you will find it again.”
When Sweets Became Seeds
One evening, as I drove into our estate, a group of children—mostly little girls—ran toward me with excitement. They hugged me, asked about my sons, and filled the air with joy. Moved by affection, I reached into my bag and gave each of them a sweet.
I did not know it then, but this simple gesture was the beginning of a new journey—my “sweet connection” with the children. “Let the little children come to Me…”(Matthew 19:14) echoed silently in my spirit.
When my hotel assignment ended, the sweets came to an end with it. But the children didn’t know that. Every evening, they ran to me with the same hopeful expectation. Soon, the entire stash was finished.
I realised I needed to do something different. And that’s when the Holy Spirit nudged my heart with a gentle idea that felt both small and powerful.
Ministry at the Car Door
I bought a fresh packet of sweets—but this time with a condition:
each child had to memorise a Bible verse to receive one.
In that moment, I understood something deeply: ministry is not confined to pulpits. God had placed a mission field right at my parking spot. Some of these children had no other spiritual influence. This was an opportunity to sow the seeds of God’s Word into tender hearts (Luke 8:11).
And God moved—so beautifully, so gently.
Some admitted they had never memorised a verse before. Others recalled bits of Scripture from school. I started teaching them short verses, and their eagerness was overwhelming.
Some wrote the verses on tiny pieces of paper so they wouldn’t forget, carrying them proudly the whole day until I returned home.
Now, I never leave work without a few sweets in my bag. They are no longer merely treats—they are tools of ministry. Whether or not a child recites perfectly, each one walks away feeling seen, valued, and loved.
And with every verse spoken, I know that God is planting eternal seeds—seeds that will bear fruit long after the sweetness has faded (1 Corinthians 3:6–7).
Reflection Question
Where might God be inviting you to sow small seeds of His Word in the ordinary spaces of your daily life?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for turning ordinary moments into extraordinary testimonies of Your grace. I bless Your Name for the gift of life and for the creative ways You reach out to hearts. May every verse these children recite rise above the sweetness of any candy and become a living seed, planted deep within them. Let each seed take root, grow, and bring forth fruit for Your glory alone.
Amen.
